The starting point of the Blind Dance research, was to create a vest-haptic-wearable device that could allow a blind person to experience dance.

The project offers an immersive dance experience using wireless communication.

With one device the dancer provides the input. A vest-elasticSensor-wearable

With a second device the public receives the output. A vest-haptic-wearable that emulate with motors the movements of the back of the dancer.

DESIGN

The project contains 2 wearables:

1. INPUT for the dancer. Elastic sensor. https://www.adafruit.com/product/519

2. OUTPUT for the public. A vest provided with haptic technology - motors that emulate the movement coming from the back of the dancer.

1. Challenges and log:

With 33 bones the spinal column has many possibility of motion.

The elastic sensor needs point A and point B to be attached in order to stretch and provide data.

Positioning the Elastic sensor in a way that we can have constant values while allowing natural movement.

1.1 The natural and first option was trying to attach point A to a t-shirt & B to the pants.

1.2 Point A to a necklace & B to the pants.

1.3 Since we were using the pants as suspender the logical upgrade was to HACK a piece of suspenders and place the sensor there...

....Problem to be foreseen:

the grip of the suspenders is not too strong and today (4/12/18) they were falling out of their place when requiring extreme extension.

Placing the electronics in the vest-elastic-device Vs mobility.

2. Challenges and log:

Placing the motors in a way that the person who wears the vest-haptic-device (eventually a blind person) can emulate and feel the movement coming from the back of the dancer.

2.1 First approach was made on a simple textile structure that allowed us to place the motors very easy.

The downside was the overall outlook-design and the fitting/closing time process.

2.2 After a visit to Decathlon we found a horse-riding-vest that serves our purposes.

we drilled the wholes and we are in process of placing the motors and electronics...

... Problem to be foreseen:

Time HACKING the vest and adding a pocket to place the electronics.
